Special and Seasonal Services of Worship

Special Services of Worship

Throughout the year, on occasion, special services of worship are planned on Sunday mornings to highlight a theme, a speaker or an event. Some of them are combined services, bringing together our entire congregation for one special celebration. Examples of our special services include: 9/11 Remembrance, World Communion Sunday, Faith Formation Sunday, our annual Saint Mark Festival, Spiritual Renewal Events as well as special guest speakers (e.g. Bishop Jonathan Holston, Bishop Ken Carter, Ed Kilgore, and others).

Seasonal Worship

Like the changing of the calendar following the seasons of nature, we have changing seasons of worship as we follow the church (or liturgical) calendar.

The Liturgical Calendar is divided into two great cycles: The Christmas Cycle and the Easter Cycle.

Each Cycle has three phases:

  • Christmas – Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany
  • Easter – Lent, Eastertide, and Pentecost

We mark these seasons with various acts and emphases of worship, including the following:Traditional Worship

  • Advent – A Service of Hanging of the Greens
  • Festival of Lessons and Carols – a special afternoon service led by the Chancel Choir
  • Christmas – Multiple services of communion on Christmas Eve
  • Epiphany – A Service of Communion
  • Lent – An Ash Wednesday Service (on the first day of Lent)
  • Maundy or Holy Thursday – A Service of Communion (on the Thursday before Easter Sunday, remember Jesus’ last meal with his disciples before his crucifixion)
  • Good Friday – A solemn service commemorating the crucifixion of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ
  • Easter – A Service of special music and celebration
  • Pentecost – A Service of Communion (celebrating the gift of the Holy Spirit)
