Do you recall the membership vows for the United Methodist Church?

“As members of this congregation,
will you faithfully participate in its ministries
by your prayers, your presence,
your gifts, your service,
and your witness?”

Giving is not just a good thing to do, it is an important spiritual practice, returning to God part of what God has generously given to you. By giving, you ensure that the ministry of the church continues to address the needs of our church family, our community, our state, our nation and even the world. God’s work must continue, and will do so through the use of your gifts of time, talents and financial support.

Saint Mark can receive your pledges and gifts by several means: 1) online giving, 2) cash and checks, 3) personal online banking and 4) donations, securities and contributions.

Here are some frequently asked questions, along with answers that you might find helpful:

HOW MUCH SHOULD I GIVE?

The amount or percentage you give is really between you and God. Scripture does lay out specific guidelines called “tithing” (offering the first 10 percent of our income to God).  Giving is an important practice or discipline for spiritual growth.  Many people begin by giving a smaller percentage, gradually increasing to the 10 percent tithe. It is important for all of us to stretch ourselves in the practice of giving – to “take the next step.”

SHOULD THE TITHE BE BASED ON MY GROSS INCOME OR MY NET INCOME AFTER TAXES?

Everyone must prayerfully discern God’s direction in their giving decisions. Traditional interpretations suggest that biblical tithe represents the “first fruits” of our income. By giving before the costs of housing, transportation, taxes and other expenses, we honor the principle that God owns everything. We can joyfully trust God to allow us to live fully on the other 90 percent.

WILL MY GIVING REMAIN CONFIDENTIAL?

In no way will your giving record be made public. Your giving practices and your financial information are held in the greatest of confidence.
